A lot of volunteer effort went in to creating the Heights Community Garden, which was started by the Heights Neighbourhood Association in 1996. The City of Burnaby staff were very helpful in assisting volunteers with the approval process, and local businesses such as Chevron Canada donated equipment and their expertise to prepare the site. The garden really took shape when the ”work parties“ started and all the volunteers got out to build it—it was a miracle the way people with the right experience and knowledge would just show up to work. We had our first planting in 1997, and have been going strong ever since.
